Job Title: Studio Assistant – The Glass Foundry
Location: Stroud, United Kingdom
Position Type: 24hrs/week

We specialize in creating exquisite glass sculptures and artworks through the intricate process of glass casting. Our studio is dedicated to craftsmanship, innovation, and artistic excellence. We are looking for a dedicated and talented Studio Assistant to join our team and contribute to the creation of exceptional glass artworks.
Job Description: As a Studio Assistant at The Glass Foundry, you will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of our glass studio. You will work closely with our skilled artists and craftsmen to assist in various tasks related to glass processing, finishing and studio maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
Material Preparation: Assist in the preparation of glass materials, including cutting and shaping glass, mixing refractory moulds, and ensuring proper storage of materials.
Model Preparation: Collaborate with artists to prepare models and prototypes for casting, which may involve 3D scanning, or digital modelling.
Mould Preparation: Help in the preparation of moulds for casting, including prepping, steaming, cleaning, coating with release agents, and assembling mould components.
Casting Assistance: Support artists during the glass casting process by measuring moulds volumes, preparing raw glass, programming and monitoring kilns, demoulding and assisting with the annealing process.
Finishing Glass – Helping in the cold working – using grinding and polishing tools - flat bed, rociprolap, hand lapping, sandblasting, air tools, Dremel etc.
Studio Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized studio environment by cleaning equipment, tools, and work areas. Ensure the safe storage and handling of hazardous materials.
Inventory Management: Assist in tracking and managing studio inventory, including materials, tools, and supplies. Place orders for supplies as needed.
Health and Safety: Adhere to all health and safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
Collaboration: Collaborate closely with glass artists and other studio staff to facilitate a smooth workflow and achieve artistic objectives.
Qualifications:
Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a glass casting or art studio environment.
Basic knowledge of glass casting techniques and materials is a plus.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy objects and working with hot glass.
Knowledge of health and safety protocols related to studio work.
A passion for art and an appreciation for the creative process.

Notes:
In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities listed above, the Studio Assistant may also be asked to assist with other tasks related to the lost wax kiln casting process, such as creating prototypes, developing new products, and assisting with marketing and sales activities.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong interest in glassmaking and a desire to learn more about the lost wax kiln casting process. They should also be able to work independently and as part of a team and be able to follow instructions carefully.
It is important to note that lost wax kiln casting glass can be a physically demanding process, so the ideal candidate should be in good physical condition.
