Scholarship Recipient: Alexandra Searle

Alexandra Searle makes work that drips with character and immediacy. In her time with us she experimented with the slumping of glass and fell in love with the medium.

"My scholarship with Glass Lab was invaluable to realising new works in a medium I have been so keen to experiment with but had not previously had the resources to try.

The time, expertise and materials afforded to me meant that I could push the materials of glass to its limits, and fuse, slump and cast glass in many different forms.

Material experimentation is at the core of my art practice and being able to really play with this most beautiful and fragile of materials has been amazing. I learned about the different types of glass, what surface textures and colours are achievable, and how to cold work the finished piece.

I gained so much knowledge about what is achievable in this medium, which I can now take with me to continue using glass in my practice.

This will make a huge difference to my career as an artist going forward."
