Scholarship Recipient: Liz Waugh McManus

Liz Waugh McManus has a multifaceted art practice that embraces sculpture and multimedia. She makes installations using her primary sculptural medium of glass. Glass for her is an interface to use in conjunction with other processes and techniques, a material body to capture the ephemeral content of moving light.

"I was very grateful for the scholarship opportunity. In my practice, I explore boundaries between analogue and digital making, with glass, video and interactive technologies. My aim for the week was to create some sculptural glass with internal volumes and to experiment with video-projecting on, into and through it. I was able to make some video projection tests on a couple of pieces in the studio made by Fiaz to see what effects might be achieved. I also explored new mould-making techniques for core-casting glass. Fiaz was very generous in sharing her expertise and considerable knowledge of methods and equipment. I’m really looking forward to finish the test pieces. I plan eventually to make them interactive by integrating crafted proximity sensors.

As well as the chance to work with such an expert as Fiaz in her well-equipped studio, it was great to be physically working alongside the other scholarship recipients after such a long time only seeing people in virtual spaces. Fun to socialise again!”
